Interlude no. 1

As some of you might have already noticed, this music blog is less about being a diary giving away your daily dose of megabytes. Rather I consider it an archive of facts about Czech and Slovak music as defined in the blog header. It's based on my knowledge and what I have gathered from the web (which is mostly in Czech language only), from some books and from the record liner notes. Therefore I don't think it's a good idea to remove any traces of audio from earlier posts after a certain time - which has been after about five weeks so far. Instead, I have now uploaded lo-fi samples of each song that has been published, so in the future you will be still able to hear what I've been writing about. "Lo-fi" means 60 seconds of 64 kbps in mono. Front page audio will be still available in "full size" at 192 kbps (or 96 kbps if mono) as usual.

One more thing...

Prenosilova Sklipek

Someone asked for any rare Yvonne Přenosilová tracks. And indeed I've got one: He's So Heavenly [sample] that appeared on the 1990 album Sklípek, available on vinyl and MC only. In fact, the Sklípek compilation was Přenosilová's first long play album ever! The song was recorded around 1965 or 1966 with the Pavel Sedláček Group. It's a nice up-tempo R&B number, taken from the Brenda Lee repertoire.

An LP is available for sale very cheap. Hurry up!

Lou

Just wanted to say thank you. I have just returned from a week in Brno, Olomouc and Pardubice and guided by your blog have managed to pick up some excellent CDs, including the Modry Efekt 'Nova Synteza' album with the Czech Jazz Orchestra, the opening track of which - Ma Hra - is seriously groovy, a couple of Golden Kids compilatiosns and some Vladimir Misik albums. Without your blog I would not have known what to look for.

One CD I found in an art gallery in Pardubice which I suspect is a rarity even in the Republic is 'Vychodocesky Big Beat' - a compilation of 1960s bands from Pardubice and Hradec Kralove. Not listened to it all the way through yet but it includes a version of Traffic's 'Dear Mr Fantasy' by The Sonors, and an excellent track called 'Polepsi Se' by Veterani. If you don't have it already and it is of interest let me know and I'll make a copy for you

Thanks for this! Been wondering about it since you mentioned it a few weeks ago!

Chris, thanks for your feedback. I'm glad to hear that my blog already helps, that's why I do it in the first place. And there's many more stuff to come...

Regarding Východočeský big-beat, thanks for the tip. Actually a friend of mine grew up in that region, so he might have known some of those guys from his school days (1963-1968 he already lived in Prague though, and since 1968 he's here in Switzerland). Anyway, I just found an online seller so I ordered one copy of the CD to my granny's Prague address. Enthusiasts like the record editor Pavel Sonda definitely should be supported, so "bootlegging" is not really appropriate as long as the CD is still available; thanks for your offer though.

genkp, you're welcome... :)
